Otherwise known as search engine optimisation (SEO), this is the process of structuring your website to make it attractive to search engines such as Google and Bing, in order for customers to find you as easily as possible.
SERP (Search Engine Results Page)
SEO uses keywords which are words or phrases that you use to search for something in a search engine. For example here is a SERP for the keyword phrase “buy groceries online”.
Here we have used the “buy groceries online” phrase as the keyword. The computer knows I am located in Dubai, UAE and so will focus on results from there. There are two sets of results: The first, marked with a green “Ad” sign, are paid advertisements where someone had used Google’s paid advertising system to reserve this keyword to ensure that it is displayed.
Below this is the organic search engine results. Here google determines which websites have the most relevancy for listing under this keyword phrase. It is vitally important that your website is listed on the 1st page of results and ideally in the top 3. People are ‘lazy’ whilst browsing the internet and it has been shown that something like 80% of the clicks on results pages such as this are generated from the top 3 entries.
So the art of SEO optimisation is persuading search engines such as Google and Bing to place your link at the top of the list on page one. Firstly it’s important that with organic SEO (not paying), the time taken to list in the top 3 positions on the first page can take months depending upon the competition for that particular keyword. SEO optimisation is also an ongoing process because the algorithms that the search engines use are updated periodically.
If you want instant results then you need to pay for them and use the search engines’ paid advertising service.
Tools are available which will guide you in selecting the correct keywords. It’s important to note that some keywords that may seem obvious, may not actually be generating a lot of traffic, whilst other less obvious keywords might be generating a lot more. Proper keyword analysis is vital and an integral part of designing your website. The correct keywords will determine the structure of your website.
